ELWOOD EARL VAN NOTY September 06, 1922 - February 07, 2014

Elwood Earl Van Noty was born September 6, 1922 in Battle Creek Michigan and died February 7, 2014 in Riverside, California where he lived since 1942. His father, Alfred and his mother Gertrude were a ministerial couple for the Seventh-day Adventist church with assignments in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas before moving to La Sierra, California, where Elwood attended college studying business. He married Eline Sims on June 6, 1942 and to this marriage were born two children, Carole Sue born in 1944 and Gary born in 1954. Elwood was an amateur radio operator from his youth. His call sign was AA6SD and his handle was "Van"  the name by which his friends knew him. He began working at the Southeastern California Conference Book and Bible House at age 17. His good work caught the attention of leaders and he became an accountant and assistant secretary-treasurer, a position he held for 20 years. He moved to the Pacific Union Conference as assistant treasurer and manager of the investment funds, a position he held for 25 years. In retirement he enjoyed another 10 years as a volunteer accountant for the La Sierra Seventh-day Adventist University Church. In addition to amateur radio, he enjoyed hobbies which involved his children and grandchildren - they included model airplane building, soaring, electronics of all kinds, hockey and music. His son Gary was a drummer for a praise band that played in area churches most every weekend and Dad Van Noty played the shakers (which Gary hand made).

His mastery of technology and his accountant's eye for accuracy and order were exceptional. His last Christmas gift was an iPad. His love of family and his faith sustained him. The loss of his wife Eline and his son Gary made all the more precious his relationship with his grandchildren, Geoff, Sharla, Travis, and Rodney. His immediate family includes his daughter Carole Sue Bowes and her husband Ron, their children, Sharla and husband Keith, and son Rodney and his wife Julie; his daughter-in-law Pam Van Noty, and her children, Travis and Geoffrey. His brother-in-law Norman Sims and his wife Clydell and their children, David and his wife Tamara, and daughter Sherry Sims-Kinney and her son Christopher and his wife Amy. For many years Elwood travelled to Glendale to visit Shirley Corbitt, a friend from early days at Southeastern California Conference, who became part of the family.

So too, Caregivers Pininta Hutugaol and her husband Jan, son Joi, daughter Samona and granddaughter Rahel; Erla and Francis Isaac and their children Jaden and Josh; Marko and Paulo Paderanga; Ofelia and Alvaro Garcia and their sons, Giovanni and Alexis form a family of love, which, together with our love of God and the promise of Jesus' soon return sustains us.
