Chapter 109
N5FVF - James F. 'Jim' Burnett
First Call: W5GDA in 1936

James Franklin Burnett, Jr., the son of James F. Burnett, Sr. and Cornelia Ruby Regan Burnett, last of Baton Rouge, died in the 93rd year of his life Sunday March 27, 2011, from complications of congestive heart failure. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Lee Merle Abbott Burnett; his two sisters, Elizabeth Anne Dupuy of Baton Rouge and Mary Alyce Burnett of Denham Springs; his five children, Eva Sharon Burnett Laird, Monica Elaine Burnett White, Fr. Timothy James F. Burnett, O.S.B., Paul Brian Burnett, and Jeffery Dean Burnett; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy May Burnett Foggin; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

A lifelong resident of Baton Rouge, Jim retired to Covington with his wife, where he has lived near one of his sons for the last 30 years. He graduated from Istrouma High in 1935 and did two years of graduate work at LSU. He spent World War II in the Panama Canal Zone as a member of the Civil Service. He was a charter member of the Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club and a willing and eager participant in many "Ham" events. Earlier in life, he was an adventurous member of Morgan's Motorcycle Club. In 1981, he retired as a proud employee of Dow Chemical Company, Plaquemine, and remained active in the Dow Retirement Club until the end. As a member of many fraternal organizations, and a current 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Abbot Paul Council, Assembly No. 334, Jim very generously gave of his time and helped in all of their activities without counting the cost until he could do no more.

Generally known as a quiet man of few words with firmly held convictions, it can be said that he simply enjoyed people. He loved family "get-togethers" and social events of all types. A great collector of things, he still valued most, his family and friends. He cared deeply for his children and grandchildren and was always proud of their accomplishments and concerned for their welfare.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at noon today at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 2305 Choctaw Drive, Baton Rouge.
