Chapter 7

Retired Satellite Communication Systems Engineer. Contesting and chasing DX (354/338) are my top priorities. My latest interest is 6 Meters. Currently at 76/73 countries and 400 grid squares. Though I do not collect grids it is fun to work multi-hop sporadic E in the summer. Hopefully the sunspot peak will bring some good F2 openings!

The station is in a constant state of flux. Currently running a Flex 5000A, an Alpha 87A, and a modified SB220 for 6 Meters. From the photos you can see there is no shortage of radios. The antenna system is tribanders ( 53 ft / 82 ft ), a 2 element beam for 40 (70 ft), a loop for 80, shunt fed tower for 160 and a 5 element 6 Meter beam at 85 ft. The new antennas are being built. Good News! An HDX 589 tower has been acquired and is sitting in my side yard! The future system will be a 7 element 6 Meter yagi at 105 ft, a SteppIR DB18E at 98 ft, a SteppIR 4 element on a rotating ring at 90 ft, a dipole for 80 at 88 ft and shunt fed tower for 160. The new system will allow SO2R with independently steered antennas on each radio. The SteppIR antennas are reconfigurable monobanders that operate from 40 - 6 continuously.

I am now the past president (2012) of The Southern California DX Club (SCDXC). If you are in town and would like to attend a meeting please go to: www.scdxc.org. Look at the calendar for the meeting time and subject. You can download the latest newsletter from the site. It is free to all who are interested in DXing as is the archive of newsletters. SCDXC and their sister organizaiton The Northern California DX Club (NCDXC) alternate years hosting the Internation DX Convention in Visalia. This is a large convention that is a multi-club effort (SDDXC, CADXA, UDXA, & DXXE). Hams from all over the world attend and it is a great weekend getaway from work and the concerns at home during that long stretch without a holiday between New Years and Memorial Day. Hang out with fellow DXers, tell tales, attend meetings and events and come home refreshed.
