Edward R. Mathews, age 84, of 49 9th St. SE, Huron, died Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at the Huron Nursing Home.

His funeral mass will be at 10:00 AM Friday, August 19, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Joe Holzhauser officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening at the Welter Funeral Home or prior to the mass at the church Friday morning. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the funeral home with Rev. David Koch officiating with the family present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Edward Raymond Mathews was born on May 28, 1921, to Gustave and Anna (Siska) Mathews at Pierre, SD. He lived in Pierre as a young child and later moved with his family to Verdi, MN, where he lived for several years. In the early 1930s the family returned to Huron where Ed has lived since that time. Ed graduated from Huron High School in 1939.

On February 10, 1943, Ed married Marie C. Steichen at St. Martins Catholic Church in Huron. He was the owner/operator of A & M Radio until the time of his death. Ed was a member of the Huron Sertoma Club, Huron Railroad Adventures, Lake Byron Association, and Holy Trinity Catholic Parish. He was also an avid ham radio operator.

He is survived by 3 children, James (Jean) Mathews of Altoona, IA, Dorothy (James) DeRouchey of Frisco, TX, and Patricia (Harvey) Tschetter of Huron, SD; 9 grandchildren, James (Mary) DeRouchey of Omaha, NE, Jason DeRouchey of Munich, Germany, Christina Mathews of Altoona, IA, Ryan (Debbie) Mathews of Pleasant Hill, IA, Stacey (Dan) Carpenter of Pleasant Hill, IA, Seth Tschetter of Brookings, SD, Samantha Tschetter of Huron, Sarah Tschetter of Huron, and Sierra Tschetter of Huron; 5 great grandchildren, Hannah DeRouchey, Cole DeRouchey, Kris Morrison, Avery Mathews, and Patricia Dela Garza; 1 sister, Dorothy (David) Bates of Avon Lake, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marie on January 6, 1993; 2 sisters, Anna Smith and Mary Hobbs; and 2 brothers, Ludwig Mathews and John Mathews.
