Paul was survived by his wife of 53 years, Janet, including his family: brother James Mayer and his wife Marge, sister Carol Hoffman and husband Bob, daughters Wendi Mayer, Heidi Smith and her husband Scott Smith, and son David and his wife Michelle Mayer, grandchildren, Samantha Merritt, Nicole Merritt, Shelby Barstow, Kayla Barstow, Bryce Barstow, and great grandchild Aaliah.

Paul was born in Waverly, Iowa on January 8, 1943 to George and Clara Mayer. He was baptized and confirmed at St John's Lutheran Church in Clarksville, Iowa where he grew up. In 1961 Paul graduated from Clarksville High School. While in high school, he played basketball and baseball. Paul was the starting first baseman all four years, including the teams leading hitter and captain the last two years. After high school he attended the University of Iowa, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. He worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, Iowa for eight years and then moved to Michigan where he worked for Sparton Electronics and later Commonwealth Associates. After eight years in Michigan they moved to Charlotte, North Carolina where he worked for Charles T Main and Crockford Associates. He was the head Electrical Engineer at Crockford Associates. He then worked at United Engineering Group, where he was the Vice President and head Electrical Engineer.

In 2009, Paul retired from engineering to enjoy life, spend time with his wife, and to be with his family. Paul was an avid hunter and outdoors-man. He enjoyed fishing at the beach and lake, and hunting doves and ducks. He also was a registered ham radio operator and a person that could fix anything. Paul also enjoyed watching all types of sports, especially Iowa Hawkeye Football, fixing radios, collecting stamps, and antiques. Paul was a devout christian and conservative and attended Living Savior Lutheran Church. Paul was a loving father and family man, and his family always came first. He is already missed.

On Thursday, May 31, 2018, there will be a Visitation beginning at 10:00am, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 am at Living Savior Lutheran Church.
