Dr. David Maddox Hunter, 78, died Saturday, July 15, at the Baton Rouge General Medical Center.

He moved to Baton Rouge when he was in the fifth grade, graduated from the LSU Laboratory School in 1956 and from LSU in 1960. After graduating from the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans in 1963, he did a residency in ophthalmology at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami in Florida.

He joined the United States Air Force in 1962 and was honorably discharged in 1974 as a lieutenant colonel. He served as a clinical professor at the University of Texas in San Antonio, where he maintained a private medical practice from 1973-2000. He served as medical director of the TLC Laser Center in Lewisville, Texas from 2000 to 2006 and practiced at the USAF Academy until he retired from medical practice in 2010.

Hunter and his wife of 54 years, Johanne Huenefeld Hunter, lived in Colorado Springs.

He was a private pilot with 4,700 hours, amateur radio operator of W5DUU, an avid bridge player and an amateur marksman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, former LSU President John Hunter and Doris Hunter and his wife Johanne. He is survived by his loving children, David Hunter and wife, Jill, of Midlothian, Va., and Michael Hunter, of Colorado Springs, and grandchildren, Katy (Matt) of Richmond, Va., and Trey Hunter of Midlothian, and his brother Andy Hunter, of Baton Rouge.

Family and friends are invited to attend the visitation which will be held at Greenoaks Funeral Home on Friday, August 4, 2017 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm. Memorial services will follow at 2:00pm.
