John Wallace Whitten, III, age 72, passed away December 29, 2020, at Golden Triangle Hospital in Columbus.

John was born on September 12, 1948, to John Wallace Whitten, Jr. and Marianne Thaxton Whitten and lived in Sumner most of his life.

He was a graduate of West Tallahatchie High School, Belhaven College, and Jackson School of Law.

John practiced law in Sumner for 40 years, serving as county prosecutor and municipal judge in numerous local towns. He was a member of the Sumner Presbyterian Church, a long time member and past president of the Sumner Rotary Club, past Chief and long time member of the Sumner Volunteer Fire Department. He was a colonel in the Mississippi State Guard, and a very avid amateur radio operator.

He is preceded in death by both of his parents and his brother, Thax Whitten.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Mona Tharp Whitten, of Sumner, two sons, John Whitten, IV (Mandy) of Hernando, and Robert Whitten (Tabatha) of Sumner, and four grandchildren, Mary Janice, Madeline, Jay, and Max Whitten of Sumner.

A PRIVATE family Service was held.

The family requests that memorial be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
