Charles "Chuck" Paul Stanton (W5LBU), age 94, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, September 1, 2016. Chuck was born and raised in Clarinda, IA.
In his early 20's, Chuck moved to Dallas, TX to attend radio operator school after which he secured a job with Braniff Airlines as a high speed radio telegraph operator. While at Braniff he met the love of his life, Wanda "Blondie" Draper. They married on April 10, 1948.
In 1946, Chuck received his first ham radio license. A lifetime member of the Old Old Timer's Club (OOTC) Ham Radio Club, he served on the Board of Directors, as Director of the 5th Region. In addition to being a member of the American Radio Relay League he was also a long time member of the Roadrunner Chapter of the Quarter Century Wireless Association of which he was Secretary/Treasurer for many years. Up until the last few years of his life, Chuck actively communicated with his "ham" friends using his ham radio and Morse Code rather than talking by telephone.
In 1954 Chuck took a position as Chief Engineer at KOAT-7 in Albuquerque where he remained until 1960 when he accepted a position with Sandia National Labs as an Electrical Engineer, volunteering time during his lunch hours to teach math and defensive driving to other Sandia employees. Upon retiring in 1992, he did consulting work for the Labs before taking a volunteer position in the Administration Office at Kaseman Hospital. He also became a certified volunteer tax preparer through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and gave his time each tax season to assist in tax preparation for families needing assistance.
In retirement he and Wanda traveled to Europe and Central and South America. They also enjoyed spending time with family in Iowa, Missouri and at their property on the Conejos River in Colorado.
Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Wanda; daughters, Jeanne Kimball and husband Arthur, Kathy Kleyboecker and husband Jeff, Beth Jordan and husband John; grandsons, David MacCornack, Charles and Richard Kimball, and William Kleyboecker; and his faithful four-legged companion, Woody.
He is preceded in death by parents, Paul C. and Ada M. Stanton; siblings, G. Louise Stanton, William C. Stanton and Donald D. Stanton; parents-in-law, Roy J. and Nelia E. Draper; sister-in law, Shirley A. French; and granddaughter, Ada M. Kleyboecker.
Chuck was a wonderful and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He never met a stranger and will be remembered by his family and friends for the joy it brought him to make those around him laugh. He will be deeply missed.
The family would like to extend their deep appreciation to the staff of Presbyterian Hospital's House Calls and Hospice programs, and to the hospital staff for the amazing care provided to Chuck over the past two years.
A private memorial will be held.
