Captain John Eric Lindell, 80, of Port Arthur, Texas, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2018, at Oak Groves Nursing Home in Groves, Texas.

John was born May 15, 1938, in Revenna, Nebraska, to John Earl Lindell and Ruth Runcie Lindell. He was raised in York, Nebraska, and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree. He successfully passed the Certified Public Accountant professional examination at the age of 22 and was licensed in February 1962. He practiced accounting in York, Nebraska, from 1962 until 1979. He married Maureen Eddy in 1973 and they moved to Texas in 1979. His father was a CPA and also a graduate from the University of Nebraska.

As a CPA, he has been an officer in both the local and state associations in Nebraska and Texas. He had attended the New York University Federal Tax Institute during the last 47 years. He was published by Prentice Hall on the topic of Military Tax Problems. He served as a member of the Texas State CPA Relations with Internal Revenue Service Committee for 10 years.

John enlisted in the Naval Reserve in August 1955 as a Radioman Striker. He was a CTI when he received a direct appointment to a commission as an Ensign June 1967. During his career in the Navy, he rose to the rank of Captain. His specialty was as a cryptographer. He served at bases throughout the United States, Japan, at sea in the Mediterranean on the FD Roosevelt Carrier, and at Commander, Naval Security Group in Washington, DC.

John was the national president of the Naval Reserve Association (NRA). He wrote the Tax Tip article for 30 years before he was president. On April 2010, he was elected national president of the Association of the United States Navy (AUSN). He was relieved by Admiral Tim Moon at the normal turnover period. He is the only national president to be elected twice as president of the Associations at different times.

He became a member of the SMOTJ at the St. King Charles The Martyr Priory when Col. Perkins was prior. He was the national treasurer for 10 years. He holds the ranks of Chevalier, Commandeur and Grand Officiere. He was elevated to the rank of Grand Croix at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC, and Grand Commander during the National Investiture. He was the prior of St. Matthews Priory in Austin, Texas. He and Maureen traveled to Moscow as a part of the delegation celebrating the 10th re-enthronement of the Russian Patriarch and the dedication of the Moscow Our Savior Cathedral in May 2000.

John was an Extra Class Licensed amateur radio operator. He was first licensed in 1954. He enjoyed traveling in the United States and throughout the world. The study of history was an ongoing part of their lives. He belonged to Lions International and was a past master of a Masonic Texas Lodge and a past DDGM.

John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Maureen Lindel, of Port Arthur, TX; son, Navy Commander Marc Lindell and wife Mary, of Houston, Texas; daughter, Lisa Louise (who is a CPA) Harre and husband Kevin, of Shawnee Mission, KS; sister, Coralyn Makos, of Austin, TX; brother, James Lindell, of Dewey, AZ; grandchildren Bethany, Ethan and Sarah Lindell, Brielle and Trace Harre.

A visitation for family and friends will begin at 9 am Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, at Levingston Funeral Home in Groves, Texas, followed by the funeral service at 10 am

Burial will be at 10:15 am Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, in the Houston National Cemetery.
