Jean Johnes 1915 - 2009 Born on August 31, 1915 in Lanham, Maryland, Jean Johnes, the fourth child of Willard L. and Beulah F. Goss, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2009. After graduating from high school in 1931 in Hyattsville, Maryland, the family moved to Sacramento, California. She graduated from Sacramento Junior College and went on to graduate from Santa Barbara State College with a Bachelor of Science degree in homemaking and nutrition. While in Santa Barbara she met and married Charles H. Johnes. They settled in Fresno where their two children, Charles Jr. and Barbara were born. The family moved to Delano in 1944 where Charles went to work as an engineer for the United States Voice of America which broadcast to American armed forces overseas. In 1951 Charles and Jean established and managed an AM commercial radio station, KCHJ. Charles was killed in an automobile accident in 1968, and with the assistance of her children, Jean managed and operated the radio station another 24 years until 1992. She became a ham radio operator in 1949 and a commercial radio operator licensed by the Federal Communications Commission in 1951. Jean was a member of Redeemer and Hope Episcopal Church in Delano for many years, the Delano Soroptimist Club for 40 years, a Pink Lady for over 20 years, and many other local civic organizations. She was recognized for her community contributions by the Delano Chamber of Commerce as the Woman of the Year in Delano in 1994. Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents; her two brothers and one sister. She is survived by her sister, Marguerite Benedict of Maryland; her son and daughter- in-law, Charles and Verona Johnes of Lompoc, CA; her daughter and son- in-law, Barbara and Michael Brock of Coeur De'Alene, ID; granddaughters, Michelle Turner of Pleasanton, Ellen Golla of Woodland Hills; grandsons, Charles Johnes of Santa Maria and Brandon Brock of Palo Alto; and four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express their thanks and gratitude to the Delano District Skilled Nursing Facility and Hoffmann Hospice for the wonderful care and attention she received in the last three weeks of her life. This obituary was drafted by Jean herself in 1998. Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Service at the Redeemer and Hope Church, 1725 11th Ave., in Delano on Saturday, October 3, at 2:00 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, any contributions be sent to your favorite animal charity.
