Chapter 154

George M. Underberger, 90 years young, passed away February 23, 2013, in Palm Desert. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. An engineer with an adventurous spirit, he went from Peter Stuyvesant High School for Math and Science in New York City to Radio Corps School in Sacramento, to Calcutta, India, where he spent World War II in the Army Radio Signal Corps. Returning to California after the war, he met Joyce at a dance in Long Beach, California. They were married for 64 1/2 years. They have three children, Norman, Carol and David. Retiring to Palm Desert, George learned how to build stained glass windows, and set up a ham radio station. In December of 2012, George was honored by the Quarter Century Wireless Association for having held a ham radio license for 70 years! He was the biggest fan and cheerleader for his family, from the youngest to the oldest, but he saved his special adoration for Joyce. We will miss him.
