One of local hams (deceased) noted in a talk that he was present at this event. I have tried to research that fact but to date no success. According to his account, Bill was just an observer and not part of the main party. He would have been about 18 at the time of the event.

His name was William Alton Hallam and I believe his call at the time was 8LD. In that era he lived near Pittsburgh PA and could have well travelled to the site. He become a Professor at West Virginia Wesleyan College in the Mathematics Department and was a very active ham over the years. Our college club holds his old call W8LD.
