Richard Harold Kinley SPARTANBURG - Richard Harold Kinley, 72, husband of Linda Wood Kinley, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Born November 14, 1944 in Winnsboro, SC, he was a son of the late Neal Cohn and Louise Elizabeth Stillwell Kinley.

Harold had friends throughout the state of South Carolina from his years of traveling across the state for his job with the SC Forestry Commission.

He dedicated most of his life to his passion of amateur radio where he was known worldwide by his call sign WA4GIB. Harold authored three books about ham radio communications, including Standard Radio Communications Manual with Instrumentation and Testing Techniques which has been translated into Spanish and sold around the world including in Brazil, London, Sydney, Toronto, New Delhi, Tokyo, Singapore, New Zealand, and Mexico.

Though widely known and loved by friends and readers alike, he was most deeply loved as a husband, a father, and grandfather. Harold is survived by his daughter and daughter-in-law, Jennifer and Kim Kinley-Lawrence; grandchildren, Caden and Gracen; his son and son-in-law, Jack Kinley and Cain Williamson; his beloved in-laws, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephew all of whom he loved dearly. Harold is preceded in death by his wife and soul-mate of 49 years, Linda Ann Wood Kinley; and his brother, Jerry Lamar Kinley.

The family will receive friends 6:008:00 PM Thursday, March 30, 2017 at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 AM Friday, March 31, 2017 at Nazareth Presbyterian Church, 680 Nazareth Church Rd., Moore, SC 29369, by the Rev. Julie Schaaf. Burial will be in the church cemetery. In remembrance of Harold, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Foundation, 101 East Wood Street, Spartanburg, SC 29303


I am 69 years of age and retired from the SC Forestry Commission in August of 2002. First licensed as WN4GIB in 1962 and WA4GIB in 1963. Let license lapse due to inactivity. Got relicensed in October 1998 and made Extra Class on January 2, 1999.

I served as Contributing Editor to Mobile Radio Technology magazine for over 10 years and wrote a column called "Technically Speaking".

I am married (47 years) and have two children, Jennifer and Jack and two grandchildren, Caden & Gracen.

Have written three books on radio communication, PLL SYNTHESIZER COOKBOOK (Tab Books 1980) and STANDARD RADIO COMMUNICATIONS MANUAL (Prentice-Hall 1985) and The RADIOMAN'S MANUAL OF RF DEVICES,PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES, was published in January of 2004 by Noble Publishing Corporation. This latest book has been revised and expanded and retitled: The RF Desk Reference for Wireless Communications and is available from the author or from Amazon. I also have several Windows software applications available for radio/electronics applications.

I work PSK31, SSB and CW on most of the HF bands and 2 meters on local repeaters. Be sure to give me a call on the local 2M repeater (147.315+) or our 70CM repeater (442.075+)when you are in the area.
