Tommy D. Phillips, 79, of Dunkirk, passed away at his home early on Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, after a short illness.

He was born Oct. 8, 1923, in Jay County to the late Dale B. and Hazel E. Ford Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a 1942 graduate of Dunkirk High School, and he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He retired in 1990 from Indiana Glass Co. after 47 1/2 years of service as a mold maker. Tommy will be remembered for his love of music. He directed the Portland American Legion Comets Drum and Bugle Corp and also the Tommy Phillips Dance Band.Other hobbies included Ham radio operator for WA9KBT, and he was a 57-year member of the Ralph Burgess American Legion Post 227 Dunkirk. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Dunkirk.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty M. Phillips; two daughters, Dixie Mumbower (husband-Mike), Dunkirk, and Donna Jill Phillips, Bluffton; a son, Tommy (Chip) Dale Phillips II (wife-Chris), Dunkirk; his grandchildren, Dace, Dane (wife-Melissa), and Kodi Mumbower, Dunkirk, Brett McBride (husband-Mike), Bluffton, Branda Musselman (husband-Jason), Ossian, Mitchell Westerman, Ossian, Blair Westerman, Indianapolis, Devon Phillips, Dunkirk, and Matt Weber (wife-Michelle), Clay City; his great-grandchildren, Reed and Tess McBride, Blufton, Quincee and Quade Musselman, Ossian, and Ashley Weber, Clay City. Also surviving is a sister, Madonna Wehrly, Portland; and a nephew, Stephen Wehrly (wife-Rebecca), Dunkirk, Md.He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 22, 2003, at Lightner Funeral Home, 317 N. Main, Dunkirk, with Rev. Randy Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Dunkirk IOOF Cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by the Dunkirk American Legion Post 227. Calling will be 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. today, at the funeral home, and an hour before services Friday.
