October 16, 1928 ~ Services for Louis G. 'Jr' Wigen Jr., 80, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. Rev. Luther Thoresen will officiate the service.
Visitation will be Tuesday after 4 p.m. at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg.
Interment will take place at Silver Lake Cemetery in Ayrshire. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Post No. 173.
Louis George 'Jr' Wigen, Jr. was born at home near Ayrshire, Oct. 16, 1928. He was the second child of Louis George and Marlis Lenore (Hanson) Wigen. He was baptized into the Christian faith on May 25, 1930 at Zion Lutheran Church, Ruthven, Iowa and confirmed as an adult in the same church in 1946. He graduated from Silver Lake Consolidated School in Ayrshire in 1946. After farming with his father from 1946 to 1950, he enlisted into the United States Air Force and served from 1950 until 1954. He graduated from Ft. Monmouth Signal Corps school, New Jersey, in the field of electronics and held the distinction of being the school's fourth highest academic graduate in its history to that date. He served state-side two years and two years in the Far East in the field of communications. On his return, he once again resumed farming, living on the farm where he was born until his retirement from farming in 1993.
On June 26, 1960, JR and Elaine (Sears) Wigen were married at Storm Lake. To this union were born: Anna Marie in 1962 and Louis George III in 1963.
Jr. was an active lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church serving on The Board of Parish Education, Deacon, Trustee, and Finance Committee. He was a 54-year member of American Legion Post No. 173 in Ayrshire where he served as vice-commander, adjacent, commander and also served as Palo Alto County vice-commander and commander. In 1971 he became an amateur radio operator. His ham call was WBØJB. He coached Little League baseball for several years.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother Neil; his parents, one brother-in-law Emory Harris.
Jr. is survived by his wife, Elaine; and their two children; Anna Marie Enerson and husband, Arvin, and Louis George III and wife, Angela; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a brother, Leo Wigen and wife, Carol of Spencer; five sisters: Peggy Wigen of McAllen, Texas, LaVonne Bowman and husband, Junior of Bloomington, Marlene Walker Sr. and husband, LeRoy of Emmetsburg, Bev Harris of Spencer and Mildred Ewoldt and husband, Robert of Alta; and a brother-in-law, Dr. Robert Sears and wife, Jackie of Ohio.
