Former resident Charles "Chuck" Fortier died peacefully July 3, 2009, in Grants Pass, Ore., surrounded by his wife and children. A funeral Mass was held Aug. 14 at Holy Family Cathedral, 811 W. Fifth Ave., with interment afterward at Angelus Memorial.Chuck was born Nov. 4, 1924, in Spokane, Wash., to Maria (Courtier) Fortier and Herbert Fortier. Chuck served in the Pacific Theater throughout the Second World War. Chuck married Mary Elizabeth (Petersen) in 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spokane, Wash. In 1962, he and Mary moved their family to Alaska. Chuck worked for the Alaska Railroad, retiring as chief dispatcher in 1979. After their retirements, Chuck and Mary traveled throughout North America in the 1980s and early 1990s in their motor home. In 1994, they moved to Grants Pass, Ore. Chuck volunteered for the Grants Pass Police Auxiliary, where he was recognized with awards. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jeanne Marie Fortier.

Chuck is survived by Mary, his wife of 59 years; his daughters, M. Therese Fortier, Kris Fortier and son-in-law Marc Antrim and Carol Anne Fortier; his sons, Rev. Joseph Fortier, S.J., Samuel Fortier and daughter-in-law Dagmar C. Mikko, and Theodore Fortier; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
