WHITEHALL | William C. Martel, 76, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015, with his family by his side at Rutland Regional Hospital after a long illness.
Born Jan. 2, 1939, in Whitehall, he was the son of the late Joseph E. Martel and Jeanette (Taylor) Martel.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Virginia Smith and Kathryn Pregent; and brothers, Robert Martel and Harold Martell.
He was employed for 33 years by the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, where for the past 13 years of employment he was the superintendent of the Whitehall, Glens Falls and Ticonderoga armories.
William was a member of the New York National Guard in Whitehall for 34 years, retiring as a mess sergeant in 1990.
He also was a chartered member of the Skenesborough Volunteer Fire Company and a member of Whitehall Elks Lodge No. 1491.
Since 1969 he had been a ham radio operator. He held an extra class license with the call letters AA2YA. He was proficient in Morse code.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 loving years, Karen (Prieur) Martel; his daughter, Sherri Martel; sons, Scott (Sheela) Martel, Bill Martel (fianceƩ, Karen Jones); five grandchildren, Eric Aubin, Rachel Aubin, Kayla Nowicki (John), Alyssa Martel and Whitney Martel; one great-granddaughter, Julianne Nowicki; and a special sister-in-law, Debra Carswell (Bill) and their children, Mandy and Mark Carsewell.
William was a true gentleman. Nothing was more important than his love for his family and their love for him. The love he and his wife shared was immeasurable . a true partnership of love and caare for more than 53 years.
A very special thank you is extended to the Orchard Nursing and Rehabilitation Center staff for the loving care and compassion shown to Bill during his year there.
There will be no calling hours.
A memorial service is planned for a later date at the convenience of the family.
