James 'Jim' Throop Sr, of Bella Vista, Arkansas passed away Friday, August 10, 2007 at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Born to Ray and Thelma Throop May 21, 1931 in Syracuse, New York, he devoted his life to the advancement of knowledge and to the noble service to others.

Jim is survived by two sons, James R. Throop Jr., and Glen A. Throop; four daughters, Gail H. Throop, Pamela K. Throop, Janice A. Black, and Alison M. Throop; and six grandchildren. Jim was a widower to late wife Doris H. (Kay) Throop, who passed January, 2000 of Diabetes.

Jim attended High school at Ridgewood High school and later received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy. He graduated among the top of the class of 1953, completed flight training in Florida and Texas and then he received his wings of gold in 1955. He spent four tours of sea duty flying from six different aircraft carries specializing in anti-submarine warfare.

He would continue the service to his country after studying aeronautical engineering at the Navy.s post graduate school in California. He spent the next several years of his life alternating shore and sea duty including assignments at the Navy.s Air Development Command, the Armed Forces Staff College, the Operational Test and Evaluation Force, and Air System Command at the Pentagon. Jim served as a math and computing teacher at the U.S. Naval Academy, followed by his fourth sea duty where he served as first Executive Officer, then as commanding Officer. Jim went on to serve another assignment at the Pentagon.s Navy Air Warfare division, and before long he was promoted to Captain.

After two last tours including exchange duty to the Army he retired from the U.S. Navy in 1980. He continued to assist others after his retirement as a teacher at Valley Forge Military Academy and at Crowder College. He moved to Bella Vista, Arkansas in 1988 where he retired completely in 1993.

Jim was an avid member of St. Theodore's Episcopal Church, 1001 Kingsland Road, Bella Vista, Arkansas. Reverend Ken Parks is willing to help family and friends during this period of mourning.

A memorial service will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD on September 24.
