Julia Ann 'Jan' (Goode)(Meers)Fromm, 88, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Monday, August 11, 2008 at 2:38 PM in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Jan was born May 9, 1920 at Goree, Texas to Edward Nicholas and Effie D. (Stalcup) Goode. She received her education and graduated with the Class of 1939 from Goree High School. On October 14, 1939, she and Burl Douglas Meers were married at Haskell, Texas. Mr. Meers served in the US Army Air Corp and was a Military Policeman stationed at Orlando, Florida. After WWII, the family returned to Seymour, Texas and was active in cotton and wheat farming. Jan and Burl had three daughters Sherry Ann, Sandra Jo, and Beryl Dene. Jan was a devoted wife and a loving mother. In 1960, the family moved to Alamosa, Colorado and operated a ranch. Mr. Meers was a truck driver for Rio Grande Motorways and Jan was a homemaker and ranch hand. Both were active in amateur radio and obtained their first licenses in 1971. In 1972, the Meers moved to Alaska settling in Kenai and (in 1975) Anchorage. Burl was a Line Driver for Copper Freight Lines during the construction of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Burl passed away suddenly on October 2, 1976. On August 29, 1977, Jan married Alfred Joseph Fromm in Anchorage, Alaska. In 1982, Jan obtained her Advanced Class amateur radio license and was issued the Call Sign AL7FH. She loved her radio friends around the world and embraced modern technology from a very early age. After 10 years with The Municipality of Anchorage, Alfred retired and the Fromm's relocated to Bartlesville, Oklahoma in June, 1995. That same year, Jan and Alfred established JALCO Communications, a broadcast engineering contract firm and worked as a team serving 14 radio stations in SE Kansas and NE Oklahoma. The business was closed March 2005 due to service connected disabilities from US Army service in Vietnam. Jan held life memberships in The American Radio Relay League and The Quarter Century Wireless Association. Jan is survived by her husband, Alfred, of the home, daughter Sherry (Meers)Innes Kenai, AK, Step daughter Melissa Dawn Shehi, Bartlesville, OK, 3 brothers James Lyman Goode, Houston, TX, Eugene Fowler Goode, Buckholts, TX, and Robert Morris Goode, Quitman, TX. Step Grandchildren: Christiaan David Shehi II and Ashley Dawn Shehi, Bartlesville, OK Grandchildren: Rob Innes and Lisa(Innes)Robertson Seattle, WA, Scott Innes, Soldotna, AK, Jan (Kirby) Medlin, Raleigh, NC, Dena(Kirby)Lambert, N. Richland Hills, TX, Kirsten Kirby-Barfield, Keller, TX, and Robert"Beau" Kirby, Baton Rouge, LA. Great Grandchildren : Brooke and Jake Robertson, James and Juliette Innes, Christian Holland and Holly Hart, Raleigh, NC, Chelsea and Chaffy Lambert and Hannah and Brayden Barfield. Sister-in-law Ruby Meers, Nephews Boyd Lynn and Jerry Wayne Meers, Nick Goode, Jimmy Pendleton. Nieces Kathy (Pendleton) Williams and Suzanne (Goode) Ausmus. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Effie Goode, sister Berniece (Pendleton) West, husband Burl Douglas Meers, daughters Sandra and Beryl Dene, brothers-in-law Boyd and Floyd Meers, and sister-in-law Lily Meers. Jan was first licensed (at age 51) as WNØEAK in Alamosa, CO. Moved to Kenai, Alaska in 1972 and received WL7HMH. Technician KL7HMH in 1974, General in 1977, and Advanced in 1982. Changed call sign to AL7FH in 1983. She was very active on 6 meters SSB and achieved WAS SSB 50 MHz #420. In 1990, Jan was one of the first three US hams to earn the WAJA award all on 50 MHz SSB Mode; the other two being KL7IKV and AL7C. The WAJA requires comfirmed contacts with each of the Japanese 47 Prefectures. Refer to QST August 2002, Page 76 World above 50 MHz. Her first husband, Burl, was a ham and held the call sign KL7HMJ.
