QCWA # 1321
First Call: HC1FG in 1920

Ing. Carlos Cordoba Baja HC1FG (b. Riobamba 1888, SK Quito 20 Sept 1972)

"He was the creator of the station "El Prado" in Riobamba, the most powerful station in South America, in the 1930's"

Since the end of 1924, he had already had some telegraphy and radio devices and in that year he established a Radio Amateurs Club in Riobamba.

It was dedicated to the construction of a 50-watt short-wave transmitter and the first test broadcast of the radio station was carried out on February 27 1925 between the Colegio San Felipe and the factory premises, El Prado. The formal launch of the station was in June 1929..

* He married Judith Leon Nolivos in Quito, February 201922. She worked with him on the radio and was a very popular announcer at the station.

* In 1934, the station made occasional broadcasts on Sundays, on the 20 metre amateur band, especially aimed at Europe and identifying as HC1FG.

Carlos was married to Judy Cordovez and she operated with his call occasionally
Ecuador HC1FG Judy Leon Cordovez Second operator ⚭ Carlos Cordovez, HC1FG, (*1888, .1972), owner of radio station "El Prado" in Riobamba, Ecuador. "Miss Judy" was an announcer, etc. on the station.

As you can see from this listing I found, Carlos was born in 1888 and died in 1972. I believe this is Carlos in 1942 as he was with the Ecuadorian mission in NYC, so his DOB is 10/18/1887. And I think he has dual citizenship with the US.

The top entry is Carlos' entry in an autograph journal Bill Savell, W2LS maintained in his SNJ residence for visiting DX friends who came while touring the US on vacation.
It is filled with kind words from many hams and their XYL.s who W2LS invited to stay while here. What a wonderful record of international diplomacy extended to visiting Amateurs!
