Robert 'Bob' Monroe Summers, 86, peacefully died January 20, 2015 at Pinnacle Ridge Nursing Home. Robert was born September 29, 1928 in Kansas City, Kansas to Ethel (Ledbetter) Summers and Robert L. Summers. Robert was the eldest of 10 children and was preceded in death by his parents, first wife Wanda, infant son Robert Jr., son David, half sisters, Lerlene Berry, Lorraine Dooley, Elaine Beck, brothers, Harold, Fred, George, Danny and Gary, sister Janice. Survivors include his wife Caroline, daughter Sue (Tom) Jochens, son Ron, daughter-in-law Donna Summers, sisters Kathy Grider, Linda (Marion) Sylva, brother Ken (Kathy), stepdaughters Sue (Jim) McGee, Donna (Larry) Wallace, grandchildren, Eric Jochens, Bobby Summers, Jennifer Koch, Scott McGee, Jaime Johnson, Pat McGee and Tyler Wallace, 6 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Robert graduated from Bonner Springs High School and kept many of those friendships.
He was a Professional Land Surveyor and retired as City Street Inspector for Kansas City, Kansas. His favorite hobby was being a Ham Radio Operator for over 50 years serving as Kansas State Emergency Management Coordinator as well as many other offices with AARL. As a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, he served in many leadership roles. He was a Boy Scout Leader and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award. Robert was a Red Cross Volunteer for many years. Robert loved life, especially his church and family. He was happiest when talking on Air to other Ham Radio Operators, mowing his lawn, digging in his vegetable garden, visiting with his children and sitting on the deck bird watching.
The family would like to thank the staff at Pinnacle Ridge Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility who cared for him for 2.5 years with kindness and respect and all the team from Grace Hospice Care for comfort and care at the end of his life. A celebration of Robert's life will be on January 27, 2015 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS, 66215. Visitation will be held 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
