Wes Lastine, age 80, of Ames, passed away on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Mary Greeley Medical Center. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 610 15th Street, Ames, Iowa with Rev. Dr. Todd Jenks officiating. Burial will be in the Ames Municipal Cemetery. Born on July 21, 1941, in Estherville, Iowa, Wes was the son of Lyle and Irene (Pickens) Lastine. He graduated from Terril High School in 1959. Wes graduated from the University of Iowa in 1964 with a Bachelor’s degree and in 1966 with a Master’s degree in Business Administration. Wes was employed by Kresge, Bourns, and then worked for Hach Chemical for 33 years, where he traveled over 1,000,000 miles. Wes was united in marriage to Connie Johnson on August 29, 1964, in Terril, Iowa. They moved to Ames in 1966. He had a lifelong passion for ham radio. He became a licensed amateur radio operator while in high school and continued for the rest of his life. His call sign was K0GXI. In 1977, he became a member of the DX Century Club, which showed that he had verified contacts with other ham operators in at least 100 different countries. We also enjoyed spending time restoring old family cars. His favorite was a 1966 Mustang which he purchased new and later fully restored. One of the first times he drove it was to bring his oldest child, Doug, home from the hospital. Wes was a member of Saint Paul Lutheran Church and the Unique Mustang Club of Des Moines. Wes is survived by his wife, Connie of Ames; his children: Doug (Beth) Lastine of Urbandale, Jana (Brian) Sobecks of Glenview, IL, and David Lastine of Ames; five grandchildren: Kyle Lastine, Sara Lastine, Briana Sobecks, Josie Sobecks, and Teddy Sobecks. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Cheryl Lawrence.
