Darrold cared for Jane through her battle with cancer and they both lived, loved, and worked side by side until her passing in 2004. During retirement, Darrold reconnected with Judy Niklason, a childhood friend from Redfield. They spent their later years enjoying each other's company, travelling, and spending time with family. He also enjoyed amateur radio, woodworking, aviation, and computers. Darrold was honored to be inducted to the South Dakota State Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2014.
