Frederick Robert "Bob" Hawk, 96 of Oaknoll Retirement Residence, 1 Oaknoll Ct, Iowa City, IA 52246 died June 27, 2009.
No services are planned. Gifts in Bob's memory may be made to any educational or service program of the donor's choice. Among his concerns were: Iowa City Hospice, Oaknoll Educational Fund, and music, art and history programs of the Iowa City Community School District. Arrangements are with Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service.
Bob was born July 15, 1912 in Weston, WV to Herbert John Hawk and Frankie Louise "Dollie" Steinbeck Hawk Jarrett. A 1930 graduate of Weston HS he worked for American Automobile Association and State Farm Insurance in Clarksburg, WV. Bob and Charlotte Dayton Hawk married August 29, 1938. During WWII he served with the US Navy Hospital Medic Corp as Pharmacist Mate. He owned the F Robert Hawk Insurance Agency in Wichita, KS from 1946, later merging with Leon Talbott and the C Ray Tyler Agency. Bob and Charlotte moved to Iowa City in 1996.
He was a member of the Hacker's Creek (WV) Pioneer Descendants, Sons of the American Revolution, Albert Pike Masonic Lodge, Iowa City/JoCty Senior Center, Wichita and Iowa City Amateur Radio Clubs.
Among Bob's activities and awards were instigating a program of historical markers in the State of West Virginia while with AAA, a Who's Who award while with State Farm Life Co., developing an EKG rate counter for the Navy Medic Corp and volunteer recognition from the Wichita Jaycees and the United Way. He invented a health drink prior to commercial products such as instant breakfasts. Bob designed a HF mobile radio antenna that was profiled in amateur radio manuals and participated in many amateur radio emergency rescue events around the country following disasters.
Bob and Charlotte enjoyed traveling the western states, especially in the Rocky Mountains, sharing their interests of photography, Indian and western history with friends around the globe. With Charlotte's long illness Bob was a constant companion and care-giver. He enjoyed many years with folks and staff at Oaknoll, recounting historical events and sharing his extensive library. He was known for his astute memory and his sincere interest in other people and events in their lives.
The family wishes to thank staff at Oaknoll, Hospice, VA Hospital, UIHc AND Dr. Harriet Echternacht for their care. And, also, to his many ham buddies and friend John Friedrich who greatly enriched his life.
Survivors include daughters Barbara L. Haring of Iowa City, IA and Linda M. Hoffman of Belleview, FL: grandchildren David B. Haring of Wichita, KS, Steven W. Haring and partner Ida Jentzsch of Frankfurt, GER, Jeffrey G. (Kim) Haring of Iowa City, Lance Z. Hoffman, Leah D. (Kevin) McDonald and Lori R. (Joe) Harp of Ocala, FL; seven great- grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; brother-in-law, Roland H. (Mary) Dayton, Derby, KS; nieces Roberta J. Foley, Rialto, CA and Shirley V. Toohey, LaHabra, CA.
Preceding him in death were his sister Virginia Morgan in 1986, son-in-law, Stan Haring in 1990, wife Charlotte in 2000, and sister-in-law, Freida Dayton in 2004.
