John Middleton Clayton was born on May 7, 1899. His parents were Powell and Ora Clayton of Little Rock, Arkansas. His first 2-way contact was in 1916. He held numerous communications-related positions over his long career.

While still a teenager, he was a wireless instructor at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville during WWI. He later headed the radio department of Robert Dollar Steamship Company, and was manager of operations for Globe Wireless Ltd. in San Francisco. John also served as assistant technical editor of QST and secretary of the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE). And he was a senior life member of the IEEE. John retired after thirty years as advertising manager for General Radio Co.

He passed away on October 27, 1972, in Peabody, MA.
