F. Wendell Boyden Jr. (K1LWI) passed away peacefully in the company of his loving family Saturday, Dec 1, 2012, at the age of 72. Born in Boston, June 21, 1940, he grew up and resided in Quincy for almost 60 years and was most recently a resident of Hull.
Wendell had many passions, but his greatest of all was being a ham radio operator. Wendell was a giant in the ham radio world and was widely known by his call sign K1LWI and the voice of Quincy for over 50 years. He was an avid freelance motorsport photographer and a motorcycle enthusiast. Wendell was also a highly accomplished sharp shooter and at one time the worlds fastest Morse Code operator.
Wendell was predeceased by his mother, Martha (Birchby) Boyden; his father, F. Wendell Boyden; and his sister, Deborah Boyden.
The loving, longtime companion of Nancy OKeeffe, he is also survived by his sister, Diane (Boyden) Pesso of Boston. Wendell considered Nancys children his own and is lovingly remembered by Patricia Byrnes of Hull, Anthony Cuddahy and his wife, Caroline, of Hingham, Michael OKeeffe and his wife, Patricia, of Brockton, Kathy Gaddis, Kelly OKeeffe and David OKeeffe and his wife, Barbara, all of Quincy.
He is also survived by three nieces; four great-nieces and nephews; as well as Nancys many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
At the request of Wendell and family, services and burial will be held privately.
