WITKOWSKI, Leonard J.
Leonard J. "Leo" Witkowski, 89, of Manchester, formerly of Windsor Locks, husband of the late Mary Lorraine (Sosville) Witkowski, died peacefully on Thursday (February 4, 2010) at Manchester Manor. He was born on January 22, 1921, in Shenandoah, PA, son of the late Anthony and Catherine (Rugula) Witkowski.
Leonard was a graduate of the University of Hartford and went on to serve our country during World War II with the U.S. Army.
Leonard was married to Mary Lorraine Sosville on July 2, 1949, and together they settled in Windsor Locks, where they lived for over 48 years, before retiring to Sun City Center, FL.
He worked as Design Engineer for 30 years, retiring from Monsanto after many years of service.
Leonard was introduced to the HAM Radio while working on air traffic control in the service. This began a 40-year passion for operating the HAM Radio. Leonard along with his wife Lorraine helped with the communications in the aftermath of the Windsor Locks Tornado. He was also an avid mineral collector, a member of the Hartford Audubon Society and enjoyed traveling. He also spent time with telescopes, monitoring solar flares for AAVSO a hobby he enjoyed for over 10 years.
Leonard and his wife traveled through elder hostels around the world and helped to run an Elderhostel at Bradley Field at the Air Museum.
He leaves a daughter, Maryellen Sharples and her husband Frank of Somers; a brother, Tony and a sisters Eleanor all of Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by five siblings.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 8, 2010, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 446 Mountain Rd., Suffield.
Burial with Military Honor will follow in Somers Center Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association , 2550 U.S. Highway 1, N. Brunswick, NJ 08902-4301.
