William C. Severn 1932 - 2016
NEW HAMPSHIRE - William Corbin Severn, 83, passed away, after a short illness, on July 5, 2016, at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH.
Born in Utica, NY, on August 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Charles T. and Marion (Corbin) Severn. He spent his childhood in New Hartford, NY, and summers in the Adirondacks. Bill was a graduate of New Hartford High School (1950), served in the U.S. Navy (1951-1955) on the U.S.S. Chopper (SS-342), and graduated from Allegheny College with a BS in Geology (1958).
Bill worked as a material scientist of industrial crystal (silicon, sapphire, gallium arsenide, etc.) and process engineer in the semiconductor industry. He started his career in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but later took jobs in California, Utah, and Japan. For the past 30 years, until his recent move to Tilton, he resided in Nashua and Temple, NH. He was a voracious reader, an avid computer user, and had many varied interests including ham radio; identifying and collecting rocks and minerals; keeping up with new developments in science and technology; learning about numbers and math; listening to '20's - '50's jazz; growing and nurturing plants; cooking and enjoying good food; visiting new places and exploring restaurants he hasn't tried; and genealogy. He was once a Cessna pilot, a sloop sailor, and a bee keeper.
Bill is survived by his longtime companion, Asako N. Severn, of Cambridge, MA; his daughter, Susan M. Severn, of Wild Rose, WI; his son, Kenneth M. Severn and his wife, Nancy L. Severn, of Oostburg, WI; his sister, Ann Severn, of South Burlington, VT; his brother, Thomas E. Severn and his longtime companion, Joanne Harty Blair, of Ontario, NY; seven grandchildren, Charly, Andrew, Angel, Tim, Matt, Tony and Sarah; six great-grandchildren; and four nephews, Steven, David, Robert and Douglas Lloyd.
