Donald Eugene Barber Sr, K2VKZ.On August 3, 2017 Donald Eugene Barber Sr., 92, of Marathon, NY entered his heavenly home. He was born in Duane, NY to Salvador Frasquet Barber and Katie Clough Barber on November 23, 1924. Don graduated from Marathon Central High School in 1943, and also attended Associated Colleges of Upper New York. A proud veteran and a member of the Greatest Generation, Don served active duty in the United States Navy during World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Cuban Crisis. He also served 28 years in the United States Naval Reserve, and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
Don had three distinct and full careers with the United States Navy, Grumman Allied Industries, and AtlanticInland, INC (New York). Don's former and current memberships included Marathon VFW, Destroyer Escort Sailors Association, The Navy League, Naval Enlisted Reserve Association, Marathon Emergency Squad, Marathon Fire Department, and the Skyline Amateur Radio Club (K2VKZ)
Don was predeceased by his parents, his sister Shirley Layaw, brother-in-law James Dedrick, sister-in-law Lois Barber, mother of his children Shirley Hamel, and father-in-law Richard Watros.
Don is survived by his wife Julie Watros-Barber; children Catherine Preston, Donald Jr. and Paula Barber, and Betty Babcock. He leaves behind ten grandchildren and ten great- grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Salvador (Pete) Barber, Anita Dedrick, and Carol Barber, and their families. He is also survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Jeffrey and Wendy Watros, Janet Watros, James and Carol Watros, and their families. Other survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends at the Marathon Methodist Church 16 Main Street Marathon, NY 13803 Wednesday August 9, 2017 from 9 am until service time at 11 am.
