Jim was first licensed in 1958 in Eagle Rock, VA.

He moved to the Washington DC area in 1961 to attend technical school (CREI).

He stayed in the MD/DC area for 46 years, working for Defense Electronics, NASA (GSFC) and NBS/NIST.

He moved to Charlottesville in 2007. He is Technical Director of the Albemarle Amateur Radio Club and Trustee of its repeaters, WA4TFZ and W4DO.

He joined ARRL in 1959 and is a Life Member.

He joined QCWA in 2005 and became QCWA Chapter 155 Secretary/Treasurer in 2010.
