He was employed by the Town of Fort Mill for 35 years as city clerk, treasurer and later as the town`s first city manager, until he retired in 1983.

He served as secretary of the board of trustees of York General Hospital from 1962-65. He formerly owned and operated Gaither Insurance Agency of Statesville, NC, and the Kirkwood Dairy Farm of Fort Mill.

He was a past member of the Lions Club, the Masons, Fort Mill Chamber of Commerce and was the first president of the Fort Mill Junior Chamber of Commerce.

He was active in the Democratic Party, Civil Defense and fund drives for the American Red Cross and the March of Dimes. He held the rank of lieutenant colonel in the S.C. Civil Air Patrol and served as a flight instructor in World War II for the Southeast Training Command of the Army Air Corps.
