Rev. Charles A. Burkey, 85, passed away on March 14, 2013 at Good Samaritan Center in Daytona Beach. Born in Clarington, Ohio to the late Arthur J. and Rosa Elizabeth Winkler Burkey, Rev. Burkey moved to this area 41 years ago from Norton, Ohio. Prior to his retirement, he served his communities as an ordained minister in the Lutheran Church. Pastor Burkey was not just a religious leader in his community but an active participant as well. He has been a member of The Lions Club, the DeLand Orchid Society, the Civil Air Patrol, Florida Association of Homes for the Aging, American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging, the West Volusia Amateur Radio Society, DeLand Radio Control Club and Faith Lutheran Church in DeLand. He was also a Navy veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois in 2003. Rev. Burkey leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughters the Rev. Dr. Kathryn B. Baines of Westborough, MA, Marilyn Snow of DeLand and Linda Van Duys of Columbia, SC, his sister Emma Leatherman of DeLand and six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. His family invites you to join them at a visitation on Monday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Lankford Funeral Home. They will hold a service for him on Tuesday at 11:00 am at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Deland, followed by interment at DeLand Memorial Gardens.
