First Call: WØWMR

Walter George Henderson, 91, of Elon, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2018 with his children by his side. He was born to Charles Weston Henderson and Lena Goodwin Henderson on July 10, 1926 in Jackson, MO. Those left to cherish his memory are his children, George (Mary) Henderson of Brighton, MI; daughter, Jean (Mike) Ligon of Lexington, KY; daughter-in-law, Mary Beth Henderson of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Jill (Ryan) Davis of Lexington, KY, Kevin Ligon of Seattle, WA and Weston Henderson of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Walt was a devoted husband to Lillian Humphrey Henderson for 61 years prior to her passing in 2017. His gentle spirit and quiet nature will be greatly missed. It brings the family great comfort that he is now reunited with his sweetheart and his son. Walt was an avid reader and held a strong Christian faith. He and Lillian were members of First Baptist Church, Burlington. He also loved to read (especially the Bible) and practice the art of calligraphy. Other hobbies included ham radio, trains, Tai Chi, and electronics.

Walt grew up on the family farm in Delta, MO with his parents and siblings. This is where his love of trains was born as a railroad track was nestled adjacent to the family farm. Walt worked diligently on the farm and learned many valuable life lessons as a result. He enlisted in the United States Merchant Marines and served from 1945-1954. He was proud of his service. In between tours, Walt graduated from Westminster College in 1947 with a degree in physics. He met and married Lillian in 1955. Their marriage was deeply rooted in love, patience, and compassion.

Walt worked for Western Electric for 32 years as an electrical engineer before retiring. He was a caring and loving father to their three children and a role model as a grandfather. In addition to his parents and wife, Walt was preceded in death by his youngest son, John Weston Henderson in 2016; siblings Allen Henderson, Elizabeth Henderson, James Henderson and Hazel Smith.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to family and friends, the caring staff of Home Instead, and Hospice of Alamance County for such excellent care.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Sunday, May 27, 2018 at 2 pm at Alamance Memorial Park with Dr. Terry Peele officiating. The family will receive friends at other times at the residence.

In recognition of Walt's love of reading and his commitment to living out his truth of the Christian faith, in lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators, one of Walt's favorite entities, so Bibles can be interpreted into different languages and distributed throughout the world.
