J.D. Bennight, 83, who was of Huntsville, Ala., and retired from NASA, died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2003. The service will be at 1 p.m. EST Saturday at Holmes Street United Methodist Church in Huntsville, with burial at Valhalla Memorial Gardens. Family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. EST today at Valhalla Funeral Home (256-852-8500).

He is survived by his wife, Mary F. Bennight of Huntsville; a son, Jim Bennight of Tallahassee; a grandson, Doug Bennight of Crawfordville; three daughters, Winnette Sandlin of Orange Park, Gay Deacon of Harvest, Ala., and Marcia Keller of Huntsville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

J.D. Bennight, 83, of Huntsville, died Dec. 16, 2003. Funeral services were held at Holmes Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. J.B. Pendergraft officiating and Valhalla Funeral Home directing.

Bennight was born Oct. 14, 1920, in Steep Creek, Texas, to W. and Allie Bennight. He graduated from Rice Institute with a bachelor.s degree in electrical engineering in 1943. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during World War II and worked as an electrical engineer for the Army Ordnance Missile Command before joining the original NASA team. He retired from the Marshall Center in 1977.

He was a member of Holmes Street United Methodist Church for 49 years and was the widower of Charlene Bennight.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Fults Bennight; one son, Jim Bennight of Tallahassee, Fla.; three daughters, Winnette Sandlin of Orange Park, Fla., Gay Deacon of Harvest, and Marcia Keller of Huntsville; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
