James (Jim) Robert Miller was born September 14, 1943 in Portsmouth, VA. He passed away at home on May 24, 2017.
After a three year enlistment with the US Air Force he accepted a 6 month contract with Lear Siegler rebuilding aircraft in the U. S. Panama Canal Zone. At the termination of the contract, he joined the Canal Zone Police as a Federal Law Enforcement Officer until the ratification of the Panama Canal Treaty. He proudly served with this professional Law Enforcement Agency and was Sargent in Charge of the Traffic Division when the treaty went into effect. During the years in the Canal Zone he became an avid Amateur Radio Operator with call signs: KZ5JM, and KZ0DX. Jim was one of the founding members of the Carolina DX Association, an amateur radio club formed in 1983.
Another interest of Jim's was target shooting that he thoroughly enjoyed at the Charlotte Rifle & Pistol Club which he frequented.
Jim is survived by his wife of 51 years, Norma Briggs, whom he met and married in the Canal Zone when she was a nurse at Gorgas Hospital, 2 sons Jimmy and Eddie, 2 brothers Ken (Texas) and Jack (Charlotte), and one sister Sharon Armstrong (Arizona).
