Bert Richard "Hop" Hays, Sr., 78 years old, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother-in-law, uncle and friend went to be with his Heavenly Father on June 30, 2022. Hop was born to Bert Roseman Hays (WWII veteran) and Kathryn Hopper Hays in Birmingham, AL on April 17, 1944. He graduated from Phillips High School in 1962 and attended the University of Alabama. He was employed by Alabama Power until 1981 when he started his successful business, Hop's Service Co. After the death of his wife, Jerry Park Hays in 1981, Hop and Margaret met and were married in Feb 1982. He became fascinated with HAM radio at a very young age and followed this passion/hobby through-out his life, enjoying numerous friendships that shared the same. Some of his valuable contributions to HAM radio were helping create the H&H Repeater Association and assisting in many emergency disaster situations through the Red Cross. He loved studying the history behind wars, particularly the World Wars and the Civil War. He enjoyed participating in Civil War reenactments. He was a Shriner and enjoyed participating in events at Zamora Temple. Hop and Margaret loved traveling the United States and Europe. Their trip to Ireland took them to one of their favorite European destinations. They truly loved camping in their fifth wheel camper at numerous camp sites across the Southeast. Hop never met a stranger and loved his family and friends as they all loved him. His family meant more to him than anything else and he was proud of them and their accomplishments. Hop is survived by his wife, Margaret Nadine; his children, Kathryn Michelle Hays, Bert Richard Hays, Jr. (Laura), Michele Rhea Hood (John); grandchildren, Laura Parker (Riley), Richard Campbell, Julianna, Chase, and Zachary Hays and great grandson, Charlie Campbell. There will be a graveside service at Boggan Cemetery in Amory, Mississippi on Wednesday, July 6, 2022, at 11:00. A Celebration of Life will take place at NorthPark Baptist Church in Trussville on Friday, July 8, 2022. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and the service will begin at 4:00.
