Richard "Dick" Bruce Florence Sr. of Ruckersville, Va., died on Monday, July 26, 2021, at home with his family by his side. He was born on June 23, 1929, at Swedish Covenant Hospital, Chicago, Ill., to the late Donald D. Florence and Eleanor H. Florence.
Dick graduated from Arlington Heights Township High School in Illinois. After moving to Virginia with his family, he attended the University of Virginia. He received a B.S. in Commerce from the McIntire School in 1958. For many years he managed the family farm "Limestone" and then became active as a Realtor in the Charlottesville area. His specialty was real estate appraisal, becoming a senior member of the National Association of Independent Fee Appraisers. He served on the Albemarle County Equalization Boards, was a member of the Virginia Vineyard Association, and held the position of chairman and secretary on the Albemarle County Electoral Board. Dick was an amateur radio operator and was one of the founding members of the Albemarle Amateur Radio Club. Upon retirement, Dick and Anna enjoyed sailing on the Chesapeake Bay and many other destinations.
Dick is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna Watson Florence; his sister, Joan Florence Tutan of Atlanta, Ga.; his children, Richard Bruce Florence Jr. (Antonia), and Mary Florence D'Agnese (Victor III); five grandsons, Benjamin Florence (Sarah), Donald Florence (Wendy), Tucker Florence (Lindsay), Ian D'Agnese, and Evan D'Agnese; two great-granddaughters, Temperance and Isabelle Florence; and two nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, 11 a.m. at Stanardsville Cemetery with Pastor Gayle Johnson officiating.
