Gene Nailon, K5DLE is now a SK. He passed away about 20 minutes ago at his shop in OKC. The possiblity was from a heart attack. We will keep you informed as things develope.
Fair well, Gene. You will be missed by all. Mostly by me, for you were my best friend and my mentor. It was you, who encouraged me join QCWA and get involved. I'll do my best to not let you down. Get that heavenly station ready, my friend, we'll need it soon

Gene A. Nailon, 65, passed away 9/13/06. He was born 11/05/40 to Gertrude and Grady Nailon. Gene was in the aviation business for over 40 years, and was a pilot with over 10,000 hours of flight time. He was a member of the quiet birdmen, a professional aviation organization. Gene was also involved in amateur radio, and was a much respected member of QCWA. He enjoyed scuba diving and sky diving where he had over 500 jumps. Gene will be greatly missed by all who loved him. He is preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers; and an honorary son, Brett Glover. Gene is survived by a brother, Donnie Nailon of OKC; 3 children, DeLana Secondi of OKC, Sherry Roberson of Olanta, SC, and Chris Nailon and wife Michelle of New Hampshire; 7 grandchildren, Stephanie, Clayton, Brittany, Candy, Stacy, Zachary, & Megan; and many close friends. Services will be held at 10:00 am Monday, Sept.18, 2006, at The Clarence E. Page Bldg on Wiley Post Airport, 5810 Tulakes Ave., with Father Joseph Kolb officiating.

Long-distance rescue via Morse code: Gene Nailon, K5DLE, reports a ham in the Rockies has a fellow amateur in Oklahoma and the Morse code to thank for helping after he fell ill during a QSO December 17. Larry Watson, W5EIU, in Oklahoma City answered a CQ on 3710 kHz from the Wyoming ham. They had been talking for about 15 minutes when the Wyoming op told Watson: "I think I'm having a heart attack, and I can't get to the phone." After that, his transmission broke off, and Watson was unable to raise him further. About the same time, Jim Caldwell, WJ0C, of Waterloo, Iowa, broke in. WJ0C was able to look up the full name and location of the Wyoming ham and relay the information to Watson, who called the police in the Wyoming town to alert them to a potential medical emergency. It turned out they were right. The Wyoming ham--whose name and location were unavailable--was hospitalized, and the prognosis was said to be good. Watson, first licensed at age 13 in 1954, says this was a first for him. (By the way, both Watson and Nailon belong to Central Oklahoma Chapter 63 QCWA.)--Gene Nailon, K5DLE
Eulogy to Gene K5DLE
There is a light that will shine no more in an old hamshack located in Logan County tonight. You will not see the glimmer of the sweep tubes in an old 101 E glowing any more; nor the sweet music of a Master Brass Pounder singing over the airwaves; a beautiful sound that we have grown to know and love for over a half a century. Gene Nailon, K5DLE, dedicated most of his life to ham radio, and for the last 25 years, QCWA was his sole passion. A "Recruitaholic" he proudly called himself; and to so many, he was more than just a friend. He was their mentor and so much more. For today, amateur radio has lost a true and faithful friend; for he has entered into the time honored realm of a SK, as so many others before us have gone on into that great station in the sky. That spiritual station not built with hands, eternal in the heavens. 73's and farewell to you, Gene, for you and your call, K5DLE, will surely be missed by all. And from me, you will always be my brother and best friend.

You are the Alpha and the Omega. You are the beginning and the end of time. You laid out the four corners of the universe. You established all of the solar systems. You placed the stars and the planets in the sky You created the seas, the mountains, the plains, and valleys. You created the trees, the flowers, the grasses and all of creation, and You created our Gene. |
To each and every one of us here, our Gene was something special. Something so unique, something, that only we and you, Father, can only know. For its hidden deep within our hearts, and today, we return him to you. We thank you for the cherished times you allowed us to spend with him. We thank you for the good times, as well as the bad, for the bad weren't really all that bad. They were just fleeting moments in time, as we became closer to returning to you. So Father, in our own humble way, we return our beloved father and friend back to you here in the homestead he loved so much, to be with you to take care of, until we meet again on our appointed day. Love him, as we loved him; care for him, as we cared for him; for one day we will be together as a family with you, Father, united as one never to be separated by death or time again. Skip N5CFM
