Manuel (Mannie) Blumkin, age 84, of Las Cruces, NM, passed away on Tuesday, July 25,2006 in Austin, Texas. He was born January 30, 1922 in Philadelphia, Pa to Isadore and Sylvia Blumkin. His family moved to Brooklyn, New York and at age 13 he began a life-long interest in amateur ("ham") radio.In 1939, at age 17, he joined the U. S. Navy. During WW II he served as a Radioman First Class on the U.S.S. Concord and the destroyer-minelayer Henry A. Wiley. After the war, he worked at Ft. Monmouth, New Jersey and then transferred to WSPG. Later, he and his wife Dorothy opened Mannie's Electronics and operated the business for 35 years.Mannie was one of the earliest members of the Mesilla Valley Amateur Radio Club and also belonged to the Disabled American Veterans and many other civic organizations. He was instrumental in acquiring the statue of General Hugh Milton at NMSU.Mr. Blumkin married Dorothy Barnett on June 7, 1954 in Las Cruces. Mrs. Blumkin died on March 31 2002. Mannie is survived by his sister Ruth Feig of Miami, Florida, his son Don Barnett and partner Walter Kellam, his daughterCarol Goldstein and son-in-law Harold Goldstein, grandchildren Dr. Mark Goldstein and wife Debra, Dr. Janine Goldstein and partner Dr. Patricia Murphy, Danielle Goldstein and fiance Dr. George Howland, great grand children Leah, Daniel, Thomas, Benjamin and Gabrielle Goldstein and Hannah Cooper.Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, July 30, 2006 at Temple Beth El, 702 Parker Road, Las Cruces with interment of cremains following at Masonic Cemetery. Family and friends will gather at the Trails West Community Center at 12:00 noon.In lieu of flowers, family requests memorial contributions be made to Temple Beth El or the Disabled American Veterans. |
