I am the first holder of this callsign, which I received in August, 1977. Applications for specific two-letter callsigns were made available to all Amateur Extra Class licensees on 1 July of that year.

I have been fascinated with radio from an early age. I started with AM standard broadcast band DXing when I was 10 years old, and built a crystal radio receiver when I was 11 years old. When I was 13 years old, I worked on a farm all summer to make enough money to get a Hallicrafters S-85 general coverage receiver at Radio, Inc. in Tulsa. I spent many hours with that radio listening to shortwave broadcast stations and amateur radio operators, and experienced the peak of sunspot cycle 19 (October, 1957) while using that receiver.

The first ham I ever met was my school Superintendent, William Wickett, W5DXJ (SK) in Tulsa when I was in the 5h or 6th grade. He demonstrated his amateur radio station for my school class and I was amazed (I remember him calling CQ and making a voice contact, and telling us that it was on the 10 meter band)! I knew then that I was going to be an amateur radio operator someday.

Look for me in the CW portion of the HF amateur bands. I like rag chewing as well as DX chasing. If you need Oklahoma on any amateur HF band or 6 meters, contact me by email if you would like to set up a schedule. If you insist, I will even meet you on SSB (if I can find my microphone!).

73, Bill
