Chapter 85

I was first licensed in 1967 as WN5TIY and have had the call K5XT since 1976. The station consists of an IC 7600 and 200 ft dipole antenna about 25 ft high.
QTH is Ferndale, AR, which is about 10 miles west of Little Rock. I have 3 sons: James (K5JAH), age 23, Mark (K5MXT), 21 yrs, and Luke, age 11. James is teaching school in south central Ethiopia, and Mark is going to school in Vancouver, B.C. Luke is a 6th grader and soccer goalie. I am an interventional cardiologist at the Arkansas Heart Hospital. We lead the nation in coronary angioplasty (stents, etc) via radial (wrist) artery access.
Another interest is recreational tree climbing, an activity I got involved in while trying to get antennas up in trees. I like to climb "wild trees", or those that have never been climbed. I used to race sportbikes (GSXR 1000) but had to give that up after a deer took me out during a ride in the Ozarks in 2008. I had 15 broken bones and nearly died, so I am happy just to be able to ride my bicycle and play with the radio!
I operate primarily on CW late at night, and I'm still trying after 46 years to get my code speed up. I also like to operate portable from the woods. The photo above was taken on a bluff above the Buffalo River during a canoe trip last March. The photo below is looking down from high enough in a cottonwood tree to drop an 80 mtr vertical!
