Donald Earl Claar, 83, of Bermuda Dunes, CA passed away peacefully at his home January 16, 2010 after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born July 29, 1926 in Centralia, WA. He served in the US Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Monterey. He and his wife of 61 years, Viola, were married on July 31, 1948 in Chicago Heights, IL after meeting aboard the Monterey while docked in New York three years earlier.
He graduated from the University of Washington in 1950 and enjoyed a long career with Hughes Aircraft Company before retiring in 1981. They moved to Bermuda Dunes in 1994 after 33 years in Northridge, Calif. He was an avid ham radio enthusiast and enjoyed talking with other hams around the world.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Viola; daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Allen Driedger of Canoga Park, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Randy Doyle of Santa Clarita, Calif.; and grandchildren, Evan Driedger of Philadelphia, Penn. and Jason Doyle of Lafayette, Calif., Kimberly Driedger of Canoga Park, and Justin Doyle of Santa Clarita.
