Harold was born October 28, 1929 in Rock Springs, Wyoming. He died peacefully in his sleep on March 13, 2008. Harold was the father of five children, Robert and his wife Judy, Michael and his wife Marilyn, David and his wife Nancy; all of Chico Calif. Debrah Potter and her husband, Neal, and Cathy Schmidt both from Yakima, WA and his former wife, Wanda Schmidt who resides in Yakima, WA; two step- children, Patty Wallace from Redding Calif. and Jerry Thompson from Idaho. Harold had fifteen grandchildren; great-grandchildren and even great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he loved with all of his heart. Harold is also survived by two sisters, Joan Busulto and Delores Ronjocsik and her husband Steve, both from Polson, Montana; one brother, Jerry Schmidt and his wife Nancy of Santa Maria; one sister-in-law, Tily Schmidt of Yuba City, Calif. Numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.
At a very early age Harold set the standard for the rest of his life. He truly loved to take care of people. He took care of his own family, the family of his second wife, Naomi and the family of his long time companion Helen. Harold had a heart of gold and even helped people he hardly knew. There is not a fishing hole in all of Butte County that Harold, his boys, grandchildren or friends had not tried their luck at. He was always ready to go fishing until his health failed him the last few years. Harold worked as a punch press operator making wheel barrows.
When they moved to Los Angeles he worked as a center-less grinder making bullets for the government. At that time he learned to repair washers, dryers and refrigerators. In 1962 Harold and Wanda moved to Chico, Calif. where he went into business with his father, Alfred at THE RED BARN on Humbolt Road. He enjoyed working on washers and dryers and stayed in business until he retired.
His son's Robert and Mike helped Harold with the business at a young age. He and his second wife Naomi then moved to Palermo. Harold was always a very pleasant man to visit and he enjoyed talking about any subject. He and Naomi were hospitable to people that came into their lives. Harold and Naomi loved to travel and they would take along their fishing poles.
When Harold was younger he hunted and fished all over the Pacific Northwest. God must have needed a good fisherman. Harold was a member of the Mid Valley Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Schmidt; his brother, Buddy Schmidt. Viewing will be from 6-8 p.m., Friday, March 21, 2008 at Newton-Bracewell Funeral Home.
