Chapter 14
First Call: KN6GKU in 1954

Robert B. "Bob" Rose, age 71 of Rockwall, TX, passed away peacefully January 9, 2010, surrounded by members of his family. He was born November 18, 1938, in Angola, IN, to Edward Milton & Josephine Rose. CQ Communications, Inc., is proud to introduce "The NEW Shortwave Propagation Handbook", by George Jacobs, W3ASK, Dr. Theodore J. Cohen, N4XX, and Robert B. Rose, K6GKU. Completely revised and updated, this new volume explains the theory behind ionospheric propagation, the sunspot cycle and the science of propagation predicting; shows you how to make your own forecasts and even looks at unusual propagation on VHF. The authors are each propagation experts in their own right.

George Jacobs, W3ASK, is a legend in the field of short-wave communications, both amateur and commercial. He has been CQ magazine's propagation editor since 1951, and helped launch the amateur satellite program. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and the Radio Club of America, and has received, among other honors, the Marconi Gold Medal Award for Engineering Achievement and the Jack Poppele Award for excellence in engineering.

Dr. Theodore J. Cohen, N4XX, has been involved in communications and electronics for over 40 years. A pioneer in many areas of Amateur Radio, he developed simplified techniques for preparing propagation forecasts, and is a prolific writer and syndicated radio broadcaster. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE and a Fellow of the Radio Club of America. Ted and George co-authored the original Short-wave Propagation Handbook in 1979, and its second edition in 1982.

Robert B. Rose, K6KGU, recently retired from a 30-year career with the Department of the Navy in which he was involved with a variety of experimental ionospheric measurement programs that led to the revision of many theories about the ionosphere. He was the co-develop of the M1NIMUF HF Maximum Usable Frequency (MUF) prediction model that is the basis for many of today's computerized Hf prediction programs. This is his first book.

"As we approach the bottom of our current sunspot cycle and DX is harder to find," says CQ Publisher Richard Ross, K2MGA, "it's more important than ever for hams and SWLs to understand how propagation works so they can be in the right place at the right time when band openings do occur. The NEW Shortwave Propagation Handbook is a reference book that no active radio operator should be without."
