Richard Gird, son of William E. and Nina Allen Gird, was born in San Diego and grew up on a cattle ranch in Fallbrook, California. He and Vernie Wellpott were married on December 28, 1941. He is survived by his son Steven Gird and daughter Lynda Gibson, 4 grandchildren, John Gird, Richard Gird, David Gibson and Christina Gibson, and 4 great grandchildren.
Dick was a part of America's "Greatest Generation". He was a defender and provider for his family. He fought to defend America and his family in World War II and Korea. In many ways his life was defined by his military service. In October, 2015, he was rewarded in a very special way for his sacrifices thanks to Honor Flight San Diego. He finally received the sendoff and reception that he and all the World War II veterans deserved in addition to visiting all of the military memorials in Washington DC. This trip and recognition was one of the highlights of his life.
He worked all of his career on aircraft repair and maintenance, most of it at North Island Naval Air Station in support of America.s military.
After graduation, his interest in airplanes led him to get his pilot license. He also drove midget race cars. Richard was employed at North Island Naval Air Station where he continued to support his country working on aircraft engines. As a ham radio operator for over 60 years, he was always ready to provide communication in times of emergencies.
A memorial service is scheduled Saturday October 15 at 3:30 at Resurrection Community Chapel, 12730 Elmpark Ln, Poway CA 92064 for friends to share memories in celebration of his life.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made, in his name, to Honor Flight San Diego or Bridge Hospice or the charity of your choice.
