Photo courtesy K7DBV This typical Novice/new General station from 1958 was assembled for just over two hundred dollars and that's with mostly new equipment. From left to right: Hallicrafters S-38E receiver, Vibroplex Original bug, Knight VFO, and EF Johnson Viking Challenger AM/CW transmitter, with a pair of 6DQ6As in the final. Between the receiver and the VFO you can make out a large, ceramic-based knife switch, which was used as the T/R antenna switch. Coax (to the TX), twinlead (to the 40m dipole at 20ft), and hookup wire (to the RX) all came together and coexisted just fine at that switch.
