Chapter 88
|
Thornton 'Woodie' Zeigler Jr, 79, of Huntsville, passed away Monday at home following a long illness. He was surrounded by family and friends during his final weeks.
Woodie was born in New Orleans, LA to Thornton W. and Mary Diggs Zeigler. He grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Norma. They were married 58 years. After serving two years in the US Army Signal Corp, he earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from his beloved University of Michigan. He continued as a leading member of the alumni association and volunteered his time to help with the football and hockey programs.
He has been a member of The Amateur Radio Association since 1958. Over the years, he worked for Collins Radio, Spartan Electronics, King-Seeley and for 23 years as a Design Engineer at Chrysler.
After retirement, he served an additional 12 years with The American Red Cross. His ability to build or fix ANYTHING has left his fingerprints and handywork all over this world. This was especially true in the lives of women-in-need and at St. Thomas (Protestant) Episcopal Church, where he was an active member for 34 years.
Survivors include his wife, Norma C. Zeigler; brother, Charles Zeigler (Mary); children, Tim Zeigler (Amy), Maryclaire Rochte (Greg), and Brian Zeigler (Christine); 11 grandchildren; and three surrogate grandkids.
A service and committal will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 12200 Bailey Cove Road, Huntsville. The family will receive guests at the church one hour before and at a reception immediately following.
In lieu of flowers, Woodie requested memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church.
