First Call: KN8JWR

Daniel Leonard Metzger, 74, of Sylvania, formerly of Lambertville and Temperance, MI, passed away Monday, August 13, 2018 after a long illness. Daniel was the son of Leonard and Catharine Metzger, beloved husband of Susan Gray Metzger, and father of Michael Metzger and Jennifer Mason.

Daniel was a highly creative and productive teacher at Monroe County Community College in Electronics Technology. He authored several textbooks and reference manuals and numerous articles on electronics, as well publishing a book on building a micro computer.

Daniel was equally prodigious and productive in his leisure. He was a lifelong ham radio operator (K8JWR), earning his license at age 13. He taught himself to play the piano and enjoyed singing barbershop and memorizing poems which family and friends loved to hear him recite.

Daniel loved the outdoors and especially the area lakes. He built a small boat and taught his children to sail, and even designed and built a windsurfer before they were commercially available. During most summers you would likely find Dan and his son Michael sailing or windsurfing the Maumee Bay.

Daniel was a man of considerable and varied intellect, but also a collector of equally interesting and varied friends. He enjoyed people and these special friends so much, that most remained lifelong members of an extended loving family.

Daniel did not profess to be religious, but knew scripture well, and studied the world's great religions, philosophers, writers, poets, artists and thinkers. He was a man of great integrity and compassion and would prefer to spend his time on one of his many travels throughout the world chatting with the locals in an Irish pub or enjoying a chance meeting with an elderly Irish man tending his sheep on a lonely country road.

Daniel loved life and lived it to its fullest, but especially appreciated life's littlest pleasures, like the innocence of a child collecting leaves in a bucket during a neighborhood stroll, or a small boy marveling at the setting sun, "Look Daddy! Someone painted the sky for us!"

Daniel is survived by his cherished wife of 53 years, Susan; son, Michael (Maureen); daughter, Jennifer; grandchildren, Jamie and Jerod Mason and Katherine Metzger; sister, Constance Ryan and sister-in-law, Marguerite King. He leaves many wonderful friends and colleagues that he loved dearly, and who will miss him very much.

The family would like to thank the caregivers at Kingston of Sylvania, Promedica Hospice and Ebeid Hospice.

Visitation is at Reeb Funeral Home in Sylvania on Friday, August 17, 2108 from 5 to 8 p.m. where the memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 11 a.m.
