He attended Lake Forest Country Day School, Cheshire Academy and Yale University, where he received his BS in 1952. He pursued additional studies at Rutgers, Temple University and the University of Hartford.
Coming from a strong naval background, both father and uncle had served as naval officers in World War I, Norm joined the Navy, receiving his wings and commission in 1949. He served five years on active duty as a carrier pilot and nine years in the Naval Reserve.
At RCA in Camden, N.J., he was product manager of avionics. This involved him in classified space and defense projects, including secure communications for the Navy, high frequency communications for the Strategic Air Command and astronaut communications for the first NASA Apollo landing.
At Computer Test Corporation in Cherry Hill, N.J., he was vice president of Marketing. In the four years after its formation CTC dominated the worldwide market for memory testing before being purchased by Siemens Corp.
As vice president and general manager of Anderson Laboratories in Connecticut his projects included key portions of the Navy's AEGIS radar, weapon guidance for the Phoenix and Patriot missiles, and the radar checkout system for Apollo 14.
Acting as marketing manager for Keithley Instruments in Cleveland, he traveled worldwide as more than 50% of the company's sales of electronic test systems for computer chips were for overseas.
Mr. Into was an active pilot. He held an FAA Commercial Pilot's license with Instrument and Multi-engine rating. During his Navy years he flew 14 different types of aircraft and as a civilian, owned several different types of aircraft, logging a total flying time of 3400 hours. For five summers, under the auspices of the Navy, he taught aviation ground school for youth at air bases in the United States, England, and Italy.
Among his hobbies were amateur radio, motorcycle trail riding and shooting sports. Not only did he maintain ham stations as K8NI wherever he lived, but he created and equipped a station for Youngstown State University with the call sign K8YSU.
After retirement, Mr. Into counseled small businesses with SCORE and as a Rotarian, mentored disadvantaged children.
He was preceded death by his brother, Henry A. Into of Villages, Fla and the mother of his children, Jane Timberman of Old Lyme, Conn.
