John W. Ness II Mansfield - John W. Ness II, 69, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. His health had been declining for several years. He was born on March 10, 1951 to the late Raymond and Alvina (Wappner) Ness. John graduated from Malabar High School in 1969 and The Ohio State University in 1973. He was an avid Ohio State Buckeyes football fan. He was employed at Wappner Funeral Directors for many years and later at The Center where he enjoyed troubleshooting their computer system. He was a longtime member of First English Lutheran Church of Mansfield. He was very active in the Buckeye Miata Club of Columbus, serving as the club photographer. He became an Amateur Radio Operator as a young man, current Call Sign K8NJ, Extra Class. He was a member of the InterCity Amateur Radio Club where he served as a board member. He was also a life member of the American Radio Relay League and served as an AARL Volunteer License Examiner. From around 1987 through last summer he worked as a Pit Reporter during the races at Mid-Ohio Race Course. He was a member of Baku Grotto and Mansfield Lodge #35 F&AM. In his leisure time he kayaked and went tent camping in numerous states. He is survived by his sister, Pat (John) Fraifogl; his niece, Angela and her husband, Martin; his nephew, Mike and his wife, Joanne; four grandnieces; his aunt, Marie Wappner; and many cousins.
